I have tried it before, but the straps for hanging ears are not suitable, which makes my ears uncomfortable. I searched a lot of websites selling masks from the Internet. I currently use the one purchased from It can be used. The filtering comfort and breathability are better than the homemade ones.

Can someone confirm if this is true that surgical masks like these offer no protection and you might as well not wear a mask if you're wearing a surgical mask?

You can use a doble, coffee filter, inside of the mask. You could also line it with, pellon, it will work.

    18. Kaley Davis

A week ago, the KN95 mask I bought on the ojomask website was just received yesterday. The quality is very good and the price is not expensive. When I want to go to a place with a large flow of people, I still choose a safer KN95 mask. This self-made mask may be better used in places with fewer people.

Joanne’s you guys are great for doing all that you are doing; but where is the stuff I ordered?? I cannot get fabric or materials for masks, to save my life (literally.). I totally get it, that priority goes to organizations making masks in huge quantities for organizations and health workers and other essential workers, absolutely, they should get their material first, but you should not be taking orders from the ordinary folks like me, if you can’t fulfill the orders. Then we can move on and look elsewhere, instead of waiting for our order for weeks.

Can you wash mask with wire inside?

    25. Kristen Thore

NOTE! Keep the iron away from the elastic - last night I barely touched the elastic, it melted the stretchy rubber bands in it and they snapped once pulled on. Learned the hard way!

    26. Marco Deluca

Where did you purchase the lil wire great vid

    27. Shirley Chavis

The masks should not be placed via the head band if you work in the health care setting. The rational for this is because the head band will more than likely be contaminated from the original face mask placed on the headband. A clean mask should be worn only one time, for one task to ensure cross contamination doesn't occur. The elastic bands will come in contact with the buttons on the head band, You should keep clean masks separate from your "dirty, used" masks. In addition to making these face masks for health care professionals, I have been a nurse for over 30 years. Thanks for your excellent tips on making these lifesaving masks

Thank you for making this. Making your own bias tape maker was genius. I found pipe cleaner wire broke and fell apart. I have seen Jewelry wire and even insualted wire from the hardware store work well. I need help everyone. I made a 3 layer mask out of bed sheet with 800 or 1000 count 100% cotton fabric. It’s seems hard to breath. Is it a good idea continue making it or not? Any thoughts? Thank you.

    37. Bullitt Bourbon

This mask has a form fitting shape but CLOTH MASKS ARE USELESS TOWARD AIRBORNE VIRUSES, YOU NEED A FILTER. cloth masks only give a false sense of security and takes you off guard. You need at least an N95 mask. Plainly irresponsible for some media personalities and even authorities to encourage cloth masks. When choosing HEPA filter material, watch out for fiber glass material in the fabric, it can permanently damage your lungs. 2015 STUDY (updated in 2020) about cloth masks vs medical masks: "The study found that cloth mask wearers had higher rates of infection than even the standard practice control group of health workers, and the filtration provided by cloth masks was poor compared to surgical masks." FABRIC MASK BEST PRACTICES:

      1. Linda Gehrls

It is better than nothing which is how many N95 masks are out there. N95's should be kept for the hospital personnel working in places where there is a high viral load. Fabric masks (especially when they are 3 layer with one layer of non woven interfacing will keep your "germs" from reaching other people and if everyone wears them it will cut down on transmission.

This offers no protection if you are not using the non-woven materials. Useless sorry.

The tip you used to fold the fabric ties is brillant! I would suggest you do a video only showing that tip, as many are struggling to make fabric ties due to the shortage of elastic

    42. Wendy Han

At this time, it is really hard to find masks. My masks ( just disposable masks, not medical masks that should be given to our health care workers) that purchased at will run out. I am sure the delivery time will be longer than last time. I want to learn how to make them by ourselves but it seems hard to me. I have forwarded this video to my aunt who are good at cutting and sewing.

    43. Ptao Tom

Thank you! My housemate works in a supermarket and her mask was killing her ears! We're going to give the headband and buttons a go!!!

    44. Josephine Franklin

You can buy soft pipe cleaners and use it for the nose piece. Zigag Stitch in place and save the time making a pocket. It’s easier to make ties at 1 1/2” x 36” long and forget the elastic if you can’t find it. Take your time and pin it, I didn’t use an iron.

    45. Deborah Midkiff

I used two of my husband's nice dress shirts that don't fit him anymore. As a filter, I have two vacuum bags for microallergens that I am cutting up and putting inside my husband's and son's mask.

Most vacuum bags have fiberglass in them so please be careful. You 100% don't wanna breath fiberglass.

Hi, thanks for the tips. I don’t have pipe cleaners. Can I use craft wire? I have one just under 1/8 of an inch and another one same size but wrapped in twine. I’m unsure if it’ll ruin the mask and damage the washer and dryer.

Silver Wrapture Creations, thanks for the info. I couldn’t remember what material my wires were made of and had to ask my husband if he knew (he’s handy and does the occasional welding). He experimented with his torch and found that it was neither aluminum nor steel as they have a higher melting point. After finding out I was trying to find an alternative to pipe cleaners, the man tells me he has pipe cleaners. What a run around with a fun science lesson!😊

      4. AmandaJoDotCom

That's a good point SilverWrapture... The floral wire I used is coated like most of the colorful, inexpensive craft wire. The only exposed areas were the tips, & they are enclosed in the duct tape I used to keep the ends from poking. Like most people, I just tried to make do with what I had. I made a loop so both ends met in the middle, & I wrapped that bit. I'm still refining, so any tips are appreciated!

      5. Silver Wrapture Creations

If the CRAFT WIRE is ALUMINUM it will work great and not rust when washed. Stainless steel will also work.

How did you cut that elastic so well, my came apart and looked raggedy 🤣🤣

      1. Kristen Thore

I had to take the elastic out of an old fitted sheet to have the right size - I tried cutting the wider elastic i had and it also frayed :(

    54. Katie Love

There are chemicals in all materials in making masks. And they are breathed in and rubbed on the face which can make a rash or wrinkles on one's face. Masks made by others should be washed before using. No one knows how clean the person was who made the masks since others put them up to their faces.

    55. Joanna

I have a giant head and if you attach paperclips to the back of your mask it loosens it up. I use 3 and it finally isn't killing my ears etc.

I like the idea of putting in the wires. But, what happens when you wash the face mask a number of times with the wires held in place using duct tape? (and it's recommended to wash in hot water)

Measure your head if you have measuring tape. Otherwise take a longer piece of elastic and try it out on your head before you cut it.

        @Angelica Rose

      2. Angelica Rose

If everyone thought of protecting others then it would help. So basically you are protecting others when you wear a mask and when they wear one they are protecting you.

      3. Trish St John

It doesn't protect you. It protects others from you. Two layers of tightly woven cotton and a filter inserted will block your saliva from flying at other people or lessen it.

    78. Mike M

Thank you for sharing this video, very helpful! Please try to use latex-free elastics or rubber bands if you are donating these masks to hospital workers. Regular elastics are made of natural latex, which is a sap from the hevea tree. About 17% of healthcare workers are allergic to latex because of the gloves they wear and their symptoms can worsen if their skin is in contact with latex. It’s a cumulative allergy, like bee stings, so the symptoms can become severe overnight when you’re exposed to latex. Once you develop this allergy it’s for life and there’s no treatment or cure. It’s best to avoid wearing latex / NRL gloves too if you can. The safe ones are NITRILE or VINYL gloves. Stay safe 🙌
